New Art Installation in Downtown Manchester

A community that embraces the arts is a vibrant one!!! Manchester now has a new sculpture on Granite Street that was recently installed and dedicated.

Ernest Modesto has entitled his work "Crossroads." It is an expression of the urban landscape from a unique perspective.

Next time you are near the Verizon Arena stop and take a look. There is a surprise in the grate of this sculpture. Mayor Ted Gatsas pointed this out at the dedication ceremony.

My Favorite Recipe: Fettucine Alfredo!!

Looking for an easy recipe that your family will love? This one is always a hit in our house!

My Family’s Fav Fettucine ‘Fredo

this particular recipe serves about 12. I have 7 people, I need to make a HUGE amount.

2-2 1/2 pounds Fettucine noodles (prepared as per the instructions)
1 1/2 cup butter
approx 15 cloves chopped garlic
3 c. heavy cream (see, told you it’s fattening)
3 egg yolks
6 cups fresh parmesan cheese
1/2 c. dried parsley
Optional: mushrooms, garlic shrimp or chicken to add into the mix…so YUMMMMMMY!

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add fettucine pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain.
In a large skillet melt the butter and add the chopped garlic. Cook on low for about 5 minutes. Stir often and try not to burn the garlic.
Pour about a 1/4 cup of the heavy cream into a smallish bowl and add the egg yolk. Beat together; put aside.
Pour the remaining cream into the frying pan on medium high. Mix rapidly with whisk as cream boils. Slowly add the cream/egg mixture because you don’t want the egg to curdle! Whisk until well blended.
Add 1 cup of the Parmesan cheese and continue to mix the cream.
Pour in the remaining Parmesan
Add the parsley
Mix until smooth.
Immediately remove from stove.
Serve over cooked pasta.
Garnish with fresh parsley.

Have some wonderful, crusty bread alongside it.

And don’t forget to eat your veggies (to counteract the fattening part)

The summer starts early with sequels to some popular favorites. The fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean films is set for release at the end of May. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides sees Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow in a new 3D adventure based on the popular Disney attraction. Go along for the ride of your life as Jack and company search for the Fountain of Youth. (Rated PG-13)
If you don’t quite have your sea legs and would prefer to drive your way to adventure, you’re in luck because Cars 2 is also hitting theaters. In this animated comedy from Pixar Studios and Walt Disney, Lightning McQueen and Mater venture overseas to compete in the World Grand Prix. Chaos ensues when the two unknowingly get themselves caught up in a little international espionage along the way. (Not Yet Rated)
What about a little 80s nostalgia, via a big-screen adaptation of a classic kid’s cartoon? In The Smurfs, How I Met Your Mother’s Neil Patrick Harris and Glee’s Jayma Mays make the move from TV stars to movie stars as a New York City couple whose lives are turned upside down by the arrival of the little blue creatures with the big hearts. It’s Hanna Barbera meets Pixar and oh-so-much-fun. (Not Yet Rated)
Of course, for many kids (and quite a few parents), summer 2011 belongs to one film alone – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II. Harry, Ron and Hermione have one last shot to defeat the evil Voldemort. Will they succeed? If you have read the books, you probably already know the answer, but somehow seeing it play out on a big screen is still an adventure unlike any other. (Not Yet Rated)

Speaking of action, if thrilling theater is what you seek, then X-Men: First Class might be the first-class choice for you. A prequel to the Hugh Jackman movies of recent years, First Class chronicles the early days of Professor X and the gang. Up-and-comers like Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult and recent Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence shine as the young would-be superheroes in this action flick with heart. (Not Yet Rated)
If that’s still not enough comic book action for you, you can always check out Ryan Reynolds in Green Lantern. Not to be mistaken with Seth Rogen’s recent action caper Green Hornet, Green Lantern is all action, all the time. Based on the DC Comic of the same name, a sequel has already been commissioned before the first film is even released, so you know it’s going to be good. (Not Yet Rated)
J.J. Abrams, the man behind Lost,is back again with Super 8. A first-person-style film in the vein of his 2008 hit Cloverfield, the plot of Super 8 revolves around a group of kids who catch some alien activity on their cameras. Further details are being kept under close wraps, but early buzz leads to this being the sleeper hit of the summer. (Not Yet Rated)
Last, what do you get when you combine Academy Award-nominated actor Ryan Gosling, Grammy Award-winning opera singer Josh Groban and a former America’s Next Top Model contestant? Why, the cast of Steve Carell’s new comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, of course. Carell plays a man whose seemingly perfect life comes crashing down around him, forcing him back out into the dating world. Out of practice and seemingly befuddled by the process, he is taken under the wing of a 30-something playboy, played by Gosling, who is appearing in his first comedic role since his pre-fame turn on a late 90s Canadian teen comedy Breaker High. A heartwarming comedy about family and starting over, it’s the flat-out hilarious, feel-good comedic romp of the summer. (Rated PG-13)

Springtime in Boston Common: Just a Tank Away!!!

On a recent trip to Boston I enjoyed the beauty of the Boston Common and Public Gardens. You can't help but feel like the cold days of winter are behind us after a walk here. The trees and flowers are in full bloom right now.

You might enjoy a look at some of the historic states in the park. This one of George Washington is very prominate! Don't forget to look for the Make Way for Ducklings statue in the corner closest to Charles Street.

Of course the Swan Boats are in the water and ready to go. You havent lived until you have tried this.

The tulips are amazing. There is every color you can imagine!
Boston is just a short hour trip from Manchester. Bring a picnic lunch to eat in the Common for a fun and cheap day trip!

Great Dining in Salem, NH: The Tuscan Kitchen

The Tuscan Kitchen is the Newest Restaurant to hit Salem, NH.

The Red Oak reporter recently visited this new building to check it out for you.

The restaurant is elegantly styled with a feel of contemporary Italy. There is plenty of parking and valet service is available if you like that. On Weekend nights it is very crowded so recommendations are a must. Call about a week in advance to secure a space on the first floor. This is by far the best place to be seated for a real cozy atmosphere.

When we visited we went a little early to have a drink in the upsatirs wine bar. The atmosphere here is more casual. There were cozy seats at the bar or you could sit at various corners in leather club chairs. The martini menu is large and there is a fantastic selection of wines and beers.

We were called to our table downstairs with an electronic beeper and were greeted warmly and promptly seated. The waitress was excellent. We ordered the anti-pasta plate to start. The meats and cheeses were fresh and delicious. Our meals were excellent too. All the pasta here is made on site. The raviolis are very large. We enjoyed the butternut squash raviolis and the lobster stew. The meal was delicious, fresh and large. I liked that you could order half portions for the pasta dishes. The half size is plenty.

For dessert we enjoyed the canollis with chocolate gelato.

The atmosphere, food and service were excellent. The prices are a bit high but for a special occassion it is worth it. Enjoying a new restaurant...Now That's the Red Oak Life!

It's March in NH and we all know that this means that St. Patrick's Day is almost here.

The annual St. Patrick's Parade is the largest community event in Manchester.
Each March, more than 70,000 people line the one-mile course along Elm Street, from Salmon to Auburn Streets, to cheer for bagpipers, high-school bands and marching units of all types.
The parade steps off this year at noon on Sunday, March 27, 2011.
This year's parade theme is "Helping Hands Feeding the Hungry." Help your local food pantries by donating canned goods and non-perishable fooditems. Any donation, even if it's just one can, is gratly appreciated!

A Baseball Story for the Start of Spring Training!!!

With warm weather forecast for the next few days and spring training underway in Florida, Steve O’Connor shares a baseball story:

I have a cousin several years my junior named Michael Stirk who moved to Chicago after college. I rarely see him, since Chicago is way past Worcester, and since I got married I don’t get around much anymore. Or, to paraphrase Henry Thoreau, “In recent years I have traveled a great deal, in Lowell.” I am kept informed of Michael Stirk’s adventures by another cousin, though, whom I do see regularly, because she lives about fifty yards from me. Michael seems to have had quite a few adventures, and is apparently somewhat of a raconteur. My little cousin Mike is a civil engineer. I hate it when my younger cousins are smarter than I am. He’s also a rock and roller, in a band called Windows Nine. My cousin’s band was booked to entertain the crowd at Cummisky Park, before a game seven that was never played since the White Sox swept the Astros. I hate it when my younger cousins are more talented than I am. He said that that was one gig he was happy never to have played, because the World Series sweep meant more to him.
Oh yeah. He’s a big baseball fan. His loyalties are divided pretty evenly between The Boston Red Sox and The Chicago White Sox. They’re both American League, right? What I know about baseball would fit in a thimble and you’d still have room for a gallon of water, but I believe they’re both American League and so they could never take to the diamond as World Series opponents, but if that could happen, I believe that Michael would come down as 51% Red Sox fan, and 49% White Sox fan.
You get the picture? It was in October of 2004, as the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees were preparing to square off in what many believed would be the final game of the ALCS championship, because the Yankees were up three games to nothing in the seven game series. Mike and two of his business associates went to meet a client to discuss some project that my cousin’s firm had been hired to plan and direct. One of those things engineers like to do, build a bridge or a tunnel or a tower. I can’t believe my little cousin can build a bridge. Notwithstanding, the client came into the meeting wearing that most dreaded article of apparel, a New York Yankees jacket. My cousin’s eyes narrowed. A shiver of disgust tinged with abject horror traversed his spine. His palms began to sweat, and he asked himself just what kind of a person he was dealing with.
His two associates cast nervous glances at Michael, hoping that he would not run out of the room, but my cousin had already donned the polite mask of the frozen smile, a mask which became even more inscrutable as the prospective client, wasting no time on the weather or their health, launched into a speech which he seemed to know by heart. “Big game on tap, guys. Get the broom, eh? You know, there is nothing like sweeping the Boston Red Sox in a championship series. There is just nothing like it for a Yankees fan. They are the biggest bunch of whining babies. I never saw a team that has so many excuses year after year. You guys Yankees fans at all?
“Well, you know…” someone muttered, as my cousin’s frozen smile began to crack.
The client directed them to step into his office and said he was going to get them some coffees. When he was gone, my cousin’s business associates asked him, “Are you ok? Stay calm! Don’t say anything!” Only gradually did they follow the look of indignant horror from Michael’s eyes to their surroundings. The man’s office was a shrine to the New York Yankees. There was a massive photo of Yankee Stadium behind the his desk, framed Yankees baseball cards, banners, programs, a photo of the client himself in the Yankee dugout with Derek Jeter, and most chilling, a poster sized framed and autographed photo of Bucky Dent. Michael Stirk had entered the Temple of Doom. “Mike! Take a deep breath!” his colleagues urged him.

“I’m all right! Let go of me!” he said, shrugging them off. And then, a flame kindled behind his blue eyes, and he told his brave companions, “Keep a lookout!” At the same time, he drew his wallet out of his suit coat pocket, and extracted a large chip of green paint from behind his driver’s license. “What are you doing?” they asked nervously, looking out the door and along the corridor, because Michael had opened the center drawer of the client’s desk, and was crumbling the chip about inside amid its contents. “It’s a chip of paint from The Green Monster,” he said, flinging the remaining crumbs about, and dropping a few between the frame and the glass of Bucky Dent’s smiling image, which seemed for an instant to grimace. Continuing his impromptu exorcism, he mumbled a fantastical prayer which was not strictly in accord with Catholic theology, though it did contain a reference to St. Patrick, and a sorrowful mystery, and was accompanied by a cross made in the air. However, Michael also invoked the spirit of Ted Williams, and ended with the words “ill winds buffet all Bronx bombers and an eternal kaybosh on this and all temples of pin-striped idolatry.”
The client came back with a tray full of coffees, and found my cousin and his two friends smiling and in high spirits. Their business concluded, he stood, and a look of inexplicable anxiety passed over his features. Then he smiled again and said, “Do you know that the Yankees have never lost a championship series after winning the first game? Isn’t that amazing? Of course in this series, they’ve won the first three, so the fat lady has sung. World Series, here we come!”
The rest is history, ladies and gentlemen. Red Sox nation watched in breathless glee as over the next several days, the mighty Yankees imploded, giving up four games in a row, losing the series and gaining the title of the greatest chokers in the history of sports. Now, I don’t say that my cousin’s incantation in the heart of an enemy camp had anything to do with this, that it somehow upset the equilibrium of karmic vibrations on which the eternal order of things is based. I’m sure it was just a coincidence. Michael Stirk himself would not take credit for the sudden and inexplicable reversal in Yankee fortune, but, as Hamlet once said, “There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy, Horatio.” Maybe Saint Patrick and Ted Williams were listening, and tied up the Bambino, but I think it more likely that God himself thought it over, and summoned with divine imperative that angel that hovers in the outfield, because in His infallible wisdom and in his implacable eternal justice, he decided that the Yankees had it coming. And yeah, verily the little Yankee office shrine in Chicago was soon draped in bunting, and there were tears on A Rod’s pillow, and the will of the Lord was done.

Riding Shot Gun with the Red Oak Plow Team!

Today I rode along with one of the guys from the Red Oak Plow Team!

It was a very interesting and exciting experience!

First of all, these guys have guts. When they are out on the road, the conditions are terrible.
Just getting to each of Red Oak's locations can be quite a chore!

Once the plow operator gets to each site they start the process of clearing the lots and sidewalks.
One of the largest obstacles is getting around the parked cars. It really helps when the car's owners can move their cars away from where the plow is and clear them off when the plow is there.

At Eagles Landing Apartments, the sidewalk crew was out clearing the walkways, the mailboxes and dumpster areas.

Next time you see the Red Oak Plows give the guys a wave!! They are there for you!!!

This is Cool...and I mean COOL!!!

The Red Oak reporter saw something that I can only classify as COOL last night!

The Bedford Village Inn has constructed an Ice Bar that will be used this week to serve martinis, wine and beer. Enjoy your martini from the ice luge or just hang out at the 8700 pound sculpted bar. It took executive chef, Earl Anthony Morse a week to create this beautiful sculpture.

The bar will be open all this week from 5 to 9:30pm. Just in time for wine week in NH!!

A Trip to Walpole NH!! What a Treat!!!

Then a trip to Walpole might be just the thing for you. Walpole is located about 30 minutes north of Keene NH on Rte 9. The town has a beautiful Village Green, some lovely shops, an outdoor skating rink and is home to Burdick's Chocolates.

Burdick's Chocolates makes their own gourmet confections and bonbons. Their mail order business has a great selection of gourmet food and choclate baskets that can be made to order.

Red Oak has a Passion for Plowing!!

Red Oak Knows Snow!!!

Everytime the Snow Flies the Red Oak Plow team springs into action.

The work starts before the storm with a check of our equipment.

We have 5 plows and a sander truck. Sand, salt and other supplies are loaded and delivered.

Then the plowing begins. This involves several trips to each location. During the storm the plow drivers are working to open up the lot and clear as much snow as possible. As residents clear the snow from their cars and move to plowed spaces more areas are plowed. As the storm winds down and after it is over, the plows return to do the final clean up and removal of snow!

The snow shovelers are another important part of the process. They work for many hours to clear doorways and sidewalks.

A New Restaurant with Comfort in Mind!!

The Red Oak Reporter was looking for some real comfort food after the storm this week.

I tried the newest restaurant in Manchester and was not disappointed!!

It's called: Mr Mac's Macaroni and Cheese. It is located at 497 Hooksett Rd in Manchester.

The menu includes 15 kinds of macaroni and cheese and over 20 toppings. I recommend the classic All American with ground beef and Mushrooms added in. There are 3 sizes for each entree and they even have lobster Mac and Cheese. I'm saving this for a special treat!

Red Oak Tackles the Storm: Blizzard of Manchester!

No one I speak with ever says they like the shoveling or plowing of snow. Sure, they like the white cover in the yard, the ski opportunities and the beautiful look through their window when they are warm and toasty in their home. But when it comes to actually clearing out the stuff it's a lot of work.

The Red Oak team is up to the task.

Take this past storm for example. The Blizzard of 2010 hit Manchesert and the surrounding towns very hard on Sun Dec 26th and Mon Dec 27th. The team sprang into action about 4pm on Sunday. The flakes were just flying and our sanders and salters were already in the neighborhoods.

The plow teams were on the road at 4am. The white out conditions made the going tough but our experienced crew knows how to handle the equipment.

The clean up continues on day 2 and 3. Sidewalks are shoveled and snow banks are piled high.

Be careful out there the roads are "wicked" slippery!

Ron explained that we are in the business to rent apartments to good residents. However, when the contract is not honored then he must try to collect. Oftentimes this is an excersice in futility. Saad Hindal is a Concord artist who was forced to flee Iraq in 2006. He came to NH in 2009 and has developed quite a following of fans who love his bold use of color, symbols and surrealistic images.

My family loves to pick out and cut down our Christmas tree each year.

One of the best places to go for this family activity is the Historic Rocks Estate in Bethlehem NH.
It seems kind of special to go to "Bethlehem" to get your Christmas tree doesn't it??

At the Rocks Estates, right on Rte 302, you can roam their fields to find your perfect tree. Afterwards, enjoy their gift shop, pick out a great wreath or other Christmas decorations. It's a great activity and part of the Red Oak Life!!!

Red Oak Salutes A Group Making a Difference!

Red Oak would like to salute one of our residents and her group who are making a difference for so many.

Harriet loves to crochet. About 4 years ago while she was at the Elliot Hospital Senior Health Center waiting for her husband who had an appointment she ran into a few of the women she crochets with. They were talking about the hospital looking to start a group to make afghans for the cancer radiation patients at the Elliot Regional Cancer Center and asked her to join them. The group is called SAK (simple acts of kindness). They meet twice a month from 10 AM to noon on the second and fourth Monday's of the month at the Elliot Senior Health Center on Webster St. and while working on the afghans the ladies socialize and share with one another. This group has grown through the years and many lifelong friendships have been developed. Most of the ladies also work on the afghans at home in their spare time. In the past 4 years the SAK group has donated over 400 afghans for the cancer radiation patients.

This past September, the Elliot Regional Cancer Center nominated the group for the Spirit of NH Volunteerism award in the adult group category. SAK was named a finalist and on Tuesday, November 9th they were awarded The Spirit of NH Service Award in the adult group category.

Needless to say this dedicated group does this knowing how comforting the warmth of their beautiful afghans are to those who are dealing with cancer treatments. Some in the SAK group are cancer survivors themselves.

Many of the afghans are made with yarn donated to the group and when they run out of donated yarn members go out and purchase more to continue their work.

If you would like to make a donation of yarn to the SAK group you can do so at the Senior Health Center on Webster Street.

Red Oak salutes the fine work of this amazing group and is so proud of our resident Harriet!

During Restaurant week I tried Firefly, located on Amherst St in Manchester.

I loved the open space in the bar, the great bar food and the friendly staff.

Have You ever had a chance to Tailgate?

I recently had my first experience at The Patriots Home Field: Gillette Stadium. The game was set to begin at 1pm and the tailgating began at 9am.

I was amazed with the precision with which trucks and vans pulled into the lot and proceeded to set up tables, chairs, grills, tents, flags and gaming areas.

One fellow, who called himself the governor of the lot, had a flat screen TV set mounted on the back wall of his tent with all the pre-game talk available to his guests.

The Food was another eye-opener! There was everything from bacon and eggs, hamburgers, wings, chili and all the fixings to one guy who was deep frying a turkey. He had his generator humming to take care of all his power needs.

Playing bean bag toss, catching footballs, and poker playing seemed to be the most popular games. I saw quite a few innovative home-made games involving tossing large washers into plywood holes.

The atmosphere was friendly and fun and everyone had a love for their Patriots.

Pulaski Park, located on Bridge Street, is an excellent place to sit and relax with your family while you take a break from the city. The lush grass fields are inviting, and are very well maintained. The aesthetics of the park make one want to sit and have a picnic, toss a Frisbee around, or relax under the shade of one of the many trees. The park also has a basketball court, which is used both by St. Joe’s and neighborhood kids looking for a retreat. While St. Joe’s building will no longer be used after the end of this school year, the park will continue to be used by people both young and old as a relaxing retreat.
This park was named after Casimir Pulaski, a Polish immigrant who became a general during the Revolutionary War who was one of George Washington’s right-hand men and the head of the cavalry. Washington reportedly once said, “General Pulaski was an invaluable resource to me during the War. I doubt that we could have won it without him.” Not only did Pulaski create a charge during the Battle of Brandywine that allowed the Americans to retreat, this charge managed to save George Washington’s life. This shows his impact on the American rebel army, and without his help we could still be British subjects. He eventually died in battle, but was honored throughout American history for his bravery, and became one of only seven people to receive honorary American citizenship.
The park itself was created by the Works Progress Administration during Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal, in an attempt to put the unemployed to work while providing valuable community service. This noble gesture was able to give temporary employment to the people that were suffering the most during the Great Depression, and it also gave beauty to an area that truly needed it. A statue was placed in the new park in order to honor this great war hero, where he is riding his steed with his sword in the air, signaling a charge. This park has done its job, both in honoring the general and giving a new, ambient park to the city of Manchester, and I hope that the park will continue to be maintained and used well by the people of this area.

Biking in NH

New Hampshire is filled with many wonderful spots for a bike ride. A series of bike trails exist in many parts of the state. The Red Oak Reporter had the opportunity to enjoy the Nashua River Rail Trail on a recent Sat afternoon. This level trail is built on the former action rail tracks. It offers an easy 12 mile ride (one way) from south Nashua to Acton Mass. Along the way you will find beautiful forests, lush farm lands and scenic wet land vistas. A highlight is the ice cream stand at the midpoint of the ride. Check it out! Now That's the Red Oak Life!

Toy Run for the Salvation Army!

Yesterday was a special day! The Annual Toy Ride for the Salvation Army was held. Over 1000 Motorcycle riders traveled from Concord to The Union Leader building in Manchester to deliver toys to the Salvation Army. These toys will be distributed to needy children this year at Christmas!

The riders were all so generous ! Santa lead the way with the NH State Police and everyone enjoyed a picnic that was prepared by the Salvation Army staff. Some riders donated money and the Corps officers, Captains Shawn and Kim Belanger were there to accept.

Red Oak owners, Ron and Gerry Dupont, were on hand to serve lunch and to thank each rider.

If you would like to donate a new toy to the Salvation Army for a needy child you can drop off your donation to the Salvation Army at 141 Cedar St in Manchester or bring it to any Red Oak Office and we will make sure that it gets to the Salvation Army.

A Big Thanks for Lorraine W Wade from Red Oak Apartments and Sunset Ridge!

Lorraine has lived here at our Sunset Ridge Community since September of 2009. Since the beginning of her lease Lorraine has been willing to help in any way possible to make our community brighter. Lorraine has a background in activities coordinating at a previous community in Texas, with her skills and knowledge she offered to start an activities committee here at Sunset Ridge.

Lorraine has gone above and beyond to make our residents feel at home, all while working two jobs. Lorraine and her Co-Coordinator Carol, have put on some amazing events, the latest being our community block party. Our residents are extremely happy with her involvement with the community that she was presented with a trophy. During our prize giveaway a little girl won the last trophy for a balloon game. She then walked over to the D.J and requested to make an announcement and give her trophy to Lorraine instead, because she thought she deserved it. In her short speech she said it was “the best block party in her life and she couldn’t wait to do it again to next year”.

Lorraine brings the true meaning to “Living the Red Oak Life”, a big thanks to Lorraine Wade.

Summer BBQ at Sunset Ridge Apartments

Relax on the River Front Walk Along the Merrimack River

Its days like these that make you want to be outside. If you are looking for a beautiful place to take a walk try the riverfront park along the Merrimack River. This quiet and peaceful walk follows the east bank of the river. Parking is available in the Millyard at one of the metered spaces. The Red Oak reporter recently walked the path from Granite Street to Bridge Street. I would suggest a picnic lunch to enjoy near the UNH Manchester campus. The Portland Pie Company opened its doors last week. This Maine based pizzeria is much more than dough and sauce. The menu carries a wide variety of classic sandwiches, wraps, salads and pastas too.
The renovation at the 786 Elm St location is remarkable. The transformation from the old Merrimack Restaurant to a sleek modern bar and eatery is truly amazing!
The bar carries a large variety of beers, ales and wine and the atmosphere is fantastic with some high top tables, flat screen TV’s and fireplace.
I had a delicious sandwich and a salad on my visit. The wait staff was friendly and the manager was welcoming.

My potatoes are looking really good too.

Red Oak Says Farewell to A Great Employee!!

Today was Dana's Last Day at Red Oak. A wonderful employee for 15 years and an essential part of our team.

Dana was the behind the scenes guy who made sure that all our maintenance projects were coordinated. He kept track of our key system with perfection, ordered materials, organized stock and got quotes on supplies.

We wish Dana well as he retires to Florida for some well deserved rest and fun.

On this Memorial Day, Let us remember all those men and women who have served and are serving in the Armed Forces.

In this great country we are very fortunate to live every day with great liberties and freedoms. The bravery of our Armed Forces makes this a reality for us all.

This March the Red Oak Reporter had an opportunity to visit the NH Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, New Hampshire. This solemn and serene location is a magnificent final resting place for many of our fallen brothers and sisters.

As you enter the grounds, the sight of all the grave markers is humbling to say the least. On this cold March day as I walked the grounds, I came upon a lone woman who set up a chair near the grave of a loved one. She sat for a long time. I tried to imagine what was going through her mind.

There is one location in the cemetery with a gazebo for visitors to sit and reflect. A beautiful visitors center is also available with services to look up the grave site location of specific veterans.

The Veterans Cemetery has a section where many groups have assembled beautiful memorials to all branches of the Armed Forces and the support groups who provide help and service to them. The design of each memorial was unique and beautiful.

I would recommend a trip to this special place to give special thanks for all those who serve our country in the armed services and to offer thoughts for our continued liberty and peace.

Remember them on Memorial Day and every day!

Container Gardening on Your Patio

Are you craving homegrown vegetables? Feel like you can’t have a garden because you live in an apartment? Don’t worry; there are several options available to you in the Manchester area.
The first is to look into a community garden. There are currently three in Manchester. The first is in the inner city at the Pine St. Community Garden. This plot is overseen by the Way Home. A second choice is run by the International Institute and is located on the Grounds of Brookside Community Church in the north end of town. The third is also located in the North End on the Grounds of the Youth Development Center. This garden supplies the Food Bank with fresh produce.
If these options do not work out you can always try a container garden on your own patio or deck. There are a few reasons why this can be a great alternative. First there is nothing more convenient then stepping out on your own deck for a fresh tomato or a few herbs for a recipe, secondly most patios or decks are sun drenched and your plants will love this. Thirdly, container gardens allow you to control the soil so that you have a perfect mix of fertilizer. This rich mix ensures success and can save you time and money. A fourth reason for loving container gardens is that it takes a lot less water to keep them damp. Lastly, container gardens are easily accessible for children and mature gardeners.
Make sure you keep your container garden watered and feed your plants with the proper plant food or fertilizer. Before you know it; you will be enjoying fresh veggies that you grew yourself. Now is the perfect time to get started!

Cactus Jacks

My husband and I always go to Cactus Jack when getting friends together. Their food is amazing but their customer service is OUTSTANDING! We almost always start with an order of their home-made chips and salsa….yummy.

A few of our favorite entrees are:
Chicken EspinacaDeep-fried chicken tenderloins served over Mexican rice with a spicy Espinaca cheese sauce on the top. Sprinkled with fresh pico de gallo, black olives, scallions, and crisp tortilla thins.
Great American BurgerOur 1/2lb. burger topped with your choice of white American or cheddar cheese.
C.B.C. RollupChicken tenderloins breaded and deep-fried, rolled in a flour tortilla with lettuce, tomatoes, ranch spread, mayonnaise, smoked bacon, and cheddar cheese. Served with corral fries. Destined to be a CJ’s classic.

Not only are the entrees amazing but their Nestle Toll House Cookie Sunday is to die for! You can have the original size or the junior size depending on how much food you had for dinner.

I highly recommend Cactus Jacks to anyone looking for great food and even better customer service!

Looking for a great meal for not a lot of dough?? Last week my fiancée and I visited 900 Degrees Pizzeria on Dow Street in Manchester. The location is great as it is only a half block from downtown with private parking for patrons. It was by far the best pizza I have ever had with awesome service.

When we arrived the server asked us if we had been there before. This was our first time there so she actually sat down with us to explain the menu and go over our options and was very helpful.

We had the Bella Cosa pizza with a chocolate dessert pizza and it was to die for! Every pizza is wood fired and served on a stand for more room at your table which is very convenient.
The pricing is great especially for a high class atmosphere and the portions are large.

We enjoyed the outdoor deck and the great atmosphere. We will definitely be back again.

Dinner on Hanover Street in Manchester.

It was a beautiful evening last night in Manchester. The restaurants were all getting ready for the St Patty's Day crowds. The sidewalk on Hanover Street was a steady stream of activity. We noticed some were hurring to Runner's Alley probably to get their sneakers for the spring season. Now that the weather has changed it is much easier to imagine getting out there to run again.

Others were rushing home to their apartment home at the Opera Block. The sunset was beautiful through the archway.

At Penuche's Grill and Bar, Chuck was putting out tables and chairs for his patrons on St Patrick's Day. This is another reassurance that the long winter dolldrums are nearing an end.

We made our way to Ignite at 100 Hanover Street for dinner. Neville Pereira, the restaurant's owner, was busy greeting every customer. He knows everyone's name. We settled in for a drink at the bar and who appeared but one of Red Oak's great residents from the Opera Block. George is a regular at Ignite and we were happy to catch up with him. Dinner was great and the atmosphere was relaxing. If you are looking for a wonderful meal, great service and friendly service don't miss out on Ignite.

Recently back from Iraq, he spoke with passion about the mission of our troops in combat. He also sent the message that each of us should be thankful for the many freedoms we enjoy. This year's Veterans Day ceremony will be at 2 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel, 700 Elm St.
Besides the quilt gifting ceremony, Maj. Gen. William N. Reddel, Adjutant General of the New Hampshire National Guard will give a keynote address. Reddel, who took his position in May, has a three-decade long military career and previously commanded the 157th Aircraft Generation Squadron and the 133rd Air Refueling Squadron.
The ceremony will include a tribute to New Hampshire's soldiers who have died in service during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Krinsky said families of these fallen soldiers donated pictures that will be featured in a slideshow displayed on a large screen in the ballroom.

I wasn't quite sure what to make of the city's private clubs when I moved to Manchester, NH, in 2004. They seemed to me part of a secret society. Their buildings are marked, but they contain no windows through which to peek inside. And the doors are always locked - you have to be buzzed in.
Just what goes on in there?
Last Friday, I found out.
Five years after I moved to Manchester, curiosity finally got the better of me. My first stop was the Alpine Club, which having nearly 1,000 members, is believed to be the largest and most popular of the city's private clubs.
Like the other such clubs I visited afterwards, the interior of the Alpine Club is dark, even in mid afternoon. The large upstairs room is dominated by a bar, around which mainly residents from the surrounding West Side neighborhood, including former Ward 11 Alderman Hank Thibault, far left, were gathered:

"There's a camraderie here - we all know each other," one of the gentlemen told me when asked about the appeal of private clubs versus public bars like Strange Brew Tavern, Milly's Tavern or The Shaskeen.
"And the drinks are a lot cheaper," a gentleman on a neighboring barstool chimed in. A beer that might cost you $4 in a public bar will only set you back $2.25 at the Alpine or most other private clubs.
Such clubs also offer free pool and other games to their members. The Alpine Club even has horseshoe pits out back:

And unlike public bars and restaurants, the state law forbidding smoking indoors does not apply to these clubs as they are private, members-only establishments. Likewise, they do not have to conform to a state law requiring all public establishments serving alcohol to have a certain percentage of their sales be food sales. These private clubs can - and do - serve alcohol only.
In my talks with patrons at various clubs I learned that the city's clubs - and others like them across the state - are acutally chartered by the State of New Hampshire.
Organizationally, the clubs are recognized by the federal government as nonprofit organizations under the 501(c)7 code of the IRS. It is this nonprofit status, as well as annual membership dues that range from $10-20 per member, that allow for the cheap drinks and other free or low-cost amenities for which the clubs are known.
A while these days the clubs are more known for their cheap drinks than anything else, most were started, as their names suggest, as fraternal associations by the city's early immigrant groups, including the French Canadians (Alpine Club, Club Canadien, etc.), the Irish (Raphael Club), the Belgians (the now-defunct Belgian Club), the Germans (Workmen's Club), the Ukrainians (Ukrainian American Citizens Club, otherwise known as "the Uke"), the Greeks (Pericles Democratic Club) and the British (British American Association).
"They were places where they could speak their own languages and be with their own people," one club patron told me.
The city's oldest private club was founded in 1883 as the Workmen's Relief Association. Located on the corner of Douglas and West streets on the West Side, it was started by Germans in what was then a German neighborhood. These days the Workmen's Club, as it is now known, functions mainly a bar:

Today, none of the clubs has an ethnic or national membership requirement of any kind. For the most part, all that's required for membership is sponsorship by a member in good standing, followed by approval from the club's board of directors.
At present, there are 16 private social clubs in Manchester, NH, not counting the five veterans clubs operated by the American Legion, the VFW and the Disabled American Veterans:

And if you think you want to join a club, I would advise going ahead and doing so. The state apparently stopped issuing charters for private clubs some years ago. The existing clubs were grandfathered in, but once they're gone, they're gone for good. Such has been the fate in recent years and decades of the Belgian Club, Turner Hall, the Hari Gari Club and others.
This also means the more recent immigrant groups are out of luck if they've ever thought of starting their own clubs.
